7E Plate Insights

A general guide to UAE number plates — patterns, categories, auctions and the market. Information to help you do your own research.

Welcome to the 7E Plate Guide

Understanding a number plate involves more than simply looking at the number. Its appeal may be influenced by its pattern, memorability, rarity, category, emirate, availability and individual preferences.

The 7E Plate Guide provides general information to help buyers and sellers understand UAE number plates and conduct their own research.

7Eplates.ae does not provide official valuations and does not guarantee the selling price or market value of any plate.

1 Understanding Plate Number Patterns

Certain number combinations may attract attention because they are easy to recognise, visually distinctive, memorable or uncommon. Preferences vary from person to person.

Pattern Example Description
Single-Digit Plate Number 1, 2, 3 Plate number consisting of one digit
Two-Digit Plate Number 12, 25, 88 Plate number consisting of two digits
Three-Digit Plate Number 123, 777, 999 Plate number consisting of three digits
Four-Digit Plate Number 1234, 7777, 2026 Plate number consisting of four digits
Repeated Digits 7777 Same digit repeated
Repeated Digit Pattern 84144 A digit repeats within the number
Sequential 12345 Consecutive numbers
Reverse Sequential 54321 Numbers follow a reverse sequence
Mirror / Palindrome 12321 Reads the same forwards and backwards
Alternating 12121 Two digits alternate
Repeating Pairs 11221 Recognisable repeated-pair structure
Triple Repetition 1112 Three identical digits together
Round Number 1000 Simple number containing zeros
Personal / Meaningful 2026 May have personal or other significance

A pattern alone does not determine a plate's value. Demand and prices may vary according to availability, emirate, category, market conditions and individual preferences.

2 What Makes a Plate Desirable?

Plate desirability is subjective. Characteristics that may attract attention include:

Rarity

Uncommon combinations may attract interest because they are less frequently available.

Short Numbers

Shorter numbers can be distinctive because there are fewer possible combinations.

Recognisable Patterns

Repeating, sequential, symmetrical and other structured combinations may be easier to recognise.

Memorability

Simple or distinctive numbers may be easier to remember.

Category and Code

The emirate, category and code can affect how a plate is perceived.

Personal Meaning

A number may have significance to an individual, family or business.

Demand

Interest in particular numbers can change over time.

Desirability does not guarantee a particular price or a quick sale.

3 UAE Plate Categories & Codes

UAE number plates operate under different systems depending on the emirate. The identification format therefore varies.

Emirate Category / Code Style
Abu Dhabi Number-based category
Sharjah Number-based category
Dubai Letter-based code
Ajman Letter-based identifier
Ras Al Khaimah Letter-based identifier
Fujairah Letter-based identifier
Umm Al Quwain Letter-based identifier

Abu Dhabi

The category number is separate from the main plate number. Example: Category 10 + Plate Number 12345

Sharjah

A numerical category/code is used separately from the main plate number. Examples: Category 1 + 12345; Category 2 + 5678

Dubai

Letters are used as the plate code/series identifier. Examples: A 12345; B 7777; AA 1234

Other Emirates

Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain use letter-based identifiers as part of their plate formats.

Plate categories, codes, designs and available series can change. For current registration, ownership and transfer requirements, users should check the relevant emirate authority.

4 How to Research a Plate Before Buying

Before buying a plate, consider the following:

1. Identify the Emirate

Understand where the plate is issued and its applicable format.

2. Check the Category or Code

Compare the plate with others from the same or similar category.

3. Study the Number

Look at its length, repetition, sequence, symmetry, memorability and any personal significance.

4. Compare Similar Listings

Review advertised prices for plates with similar characteristics.

5. Review Auction Information

Where available, examine auction results for comparable plates.

6. Consider the Seller

Different sellers may use different pricing strategies.

7. Consider Your Budget

An advertised price may change through negotiation and does not necessarily represent the final transaction amount.

There is no single price that automatically represents the value of every plate.

5 Asking Price vs. Actual Sale Price

It is important to distinguish between different types of prices:

Asking Price

The amount requested by the seller.

Negotiated Price

The amount agreed between the buyer and seller.

Sale Price

The amount actually paid in a completed transaction.

Auction Price

The price achieved for a particular plate in a specific auction.

For example, a plate advertised at AED 50,000 may eventually sell for AED 45,000, AED 40,000, remain unsold, or sell later at a different amount.

An advertised price therefore does not necessarily represent the actual transaction price.

An auction result also relates to the specific plate, auction conditions, date and participating bidders. It does not automatically establish the price of another plate.

6 UAE Plate Auctions

UAE number plate auctions provide information about bidding activity for specific plates.

When reviewing an auction, useful information includes:

  • Auction date
  • Emirate
  • Auction organiser
  • Plate category or code
  • Plate number
  • Opening price, where published
  • Final bid
  • Whether the plate was sold

Auction results should be considered within their specific context and should not automatically be treated as the market value of another plate.
